Poynor and LaRue

Nestled in the hills just west of Frankston is the small community of Poynor, an incorporated city which has a community water supply, natural gas service and a good volunteer fire department. It is governed by a major and City Council.

Key industry in Poynor is Hunt Oil Co. Gas Plant which has 250 employees continuously, servicing wells for 200 companies. Also East Texas Drilling Co. provides employment for many area residents.

The community features a popular tourist spot, the Milner Grist Mill where stone ground corn meal may be purchased.

The new Poynor Community Center has seating for 250 and serves as a meeting place for area activities.

A number of food stores, service stations and other small stores serve residents. Two churches, a Baptist church in Poynor and a Church of Christ west of Poynor, Methodist and Baptist churches at LaRue, serve the area.

Children in LaRue and Poynor and vicinity are served by the excellent LaPoynor Independent School District, with enrollment of about 400 students. Besides providing its students with the usual classroom training, LaPoynor School is noted for outstanding boys and girls basketball programs which have earned a number of state Class A championships. The school also competes in baseball in the spring. Youngsters in the area also participate in summer baseball leagues and a successful Little Dribbler program has yielded state championships recently. The school also has an excellent band and has been successful in UIL competition in literary skills and drama. It also maintains an intensive computer training program for all ages.
